MORAY U16’S BRING IN THE NEW YEAR WITH A HIGHLAND MUDFEST
Mon 17th Jan 2011
The U16’s went up to highland on Sunday for a friendly match to blow away the cobwebs after almost 2 months out of action due to the weather.

Both teams were missing several players due to exams but provided an intense match in trying conditions with a high wind and lots of mud.

Moray kicked off into the wind and the game settled into a tight forward battle with Highland pressing Moray and using the wind to their advantage. They opened the scoring in the first 20 min period with a try wide on the right which was well converted.

Moray responded well and managed to get the ball through hands in the backs and Cameron Hughes scored finishing a move that started in the Moray half. The conversion was missed.

In the second 20 min both sides continued to play a tight game. Lineouts were a bit of a lottery due to the wind but the forward play was intense and no quarter was given. Highland were concentrating their attacks through their big no 8 and eventually scored a second try.

Moray responded well and moved the ball through the backs from their own half before Ewan Stewart sprinted up the wing and scored under the posts. He converted successfully to tie the scores.

The remainder of the match saw Highland score 2 tries but Moray were never out of it and were unlucky not to score with a couple of good breaks by the backs and they finished the game in the Highland 22 pressing for a score. The game finished 22-12 to Highland – our closest result to date !

This was a good match to watch and given the conditions and lack of match fitness the players did well. Moray put up some good fringe defence around the rucks and coped well with the driving Highland play. When the ball was moved through the backs hands and got out to the Moray wings there was always the threat of a score. The team need to build on this for the upcoming Cally cup matches starting against Stornoway in 2 weeks.
