MORAY U16 V HIGHLAND 7/11/10
Mon 8th Nov 2010
Moray U16’s got the second section of their league programme under way after a break for the October holidays and the postponed Gordonstoun game.

Despite the long layoff Moray were intent to take the game to Highland and the early exchanges emphasised both teams commitment.

The game quickly developed into an evenly balanced tussle with some fierce tackling and no quarter being given in the rucks.

Highland were edging line outs and scrums but making little headway with the ball they won.

When Moray did secure good ball their backs threatened but were unable to convert the pressure into points. Moray’s back row combination was putting the Highland half backs under real pressure and several times they forced scrambled clearances from the Highland 22.

The first half remained evenly balanced until just before half time when Highland moved the ball from a ruck to their backs and were fortunate to avoid losing possession after a slight knock on.

Highland took the ball into a ruck near the Moray try line and their No 8 drove over from 5 m to open the scoring. The conversion from near the touch line was missed and Moray went in at half time 5-0 down.

The 2nd half started with Moray fired up after their efforts in the opening period and they took the game to Highland.

Moray were having more success in the scrums and started putting the Highland forwards under pressure. This gave the backs more quality ball to work with but they were unable to break the strong Highland defence. Highland were using their dominance in the line out to win ball and put Moray under pressure.

10 minutes into the second half this led to a try for Highland after their no 8 again drove over from the tail of a lineout. The conversion was successful to give Highland a 12-0 lead.

Moray did not let their heads go down and took the game back to the Highland 22. Despite winning some good ball from rucks and scrums Moray were still unable to find the final killer pass and Highland broke up the pitch.

Moray were now under pressure and a series of lineouts and scrums led to a further short range Highland try again from their impressive No 8. The conversion made the score 19-0 to Highland

Time was running out for the plucky Moray side and Highland effectively finished off their chances with another short range drive from their No 8 which was converted to make the score 26- 0 to Highland

Moray were determined to get some points on the board and from the kick off they broke up the field with Trevor Jones driving forward impressively towards the Highland try line. His break was only stopped by 2 Highland players tackling him just short of the line. This was to be the last play of the game.

The Moray team can hold their heads high after such an impressive performance. The result was much closer than the scoreline suggests and with a little more luck and some breaks they could have pushed Highland very close.

There were many impressive performances from all involved and given that this was a new formation with several late changes due to illness the team can be proud of their performance.

The Highland coach commented after the match on how much Moray had improved since their last meeting 2 months ago.

The squad are off to Stornoway next weekend for their next league fixture.
