MORAY 43 RAF LOSSIEMOUTH 25
Mon 18th Oct 2010
Moray won the local derby Caledonia League Division 2 (NW) fixture against RAF Lossiemouth last Saturday by 43 points to 25.

The win was set up by a dominant forward pack that bossed their opponents and set up an abundant supply of good ball.

Within three minutes of the start, they had taken the lead. A quick penalty was taken after the visitors were caught offside in their 22 and after a couple of drives by the forwards, No 8 Ross Joy broke the defence to score an unconverted try for 5-0.

The flyers immediately tried to reply but solid defence turned the ball over and the threat was cleared.

In the 15th minute the home side broke from their 22 and scored but the final pass was adjudged as forward by the referee. The resultant scrum was taken against the head and a back row move started a drive for the line. From the ruck that was set, Ross Joy picked up and again broke the line of defence to score under the posts. Full-back Ryan Anderson converted for 12-0.

Five minutes later, Lossie reduced the lead to 12-3 when centre Chris Clark landed a penalty given for offside in the 22.

On the stroke of half time, the Elgin side increased the lead. A scrum in the opposing 22 was taken against the head and the ball spun wide. Centre Marc Higgins received the ball and had enough space to beat the defence and score an unconverted try for a 17-3 half time lead.

RAF Lossie started the second half the brighter. In the 44th minute, after a break down in a home attack, scrum-half Irish picked up the ball and broke blind from his own 10 metre line to score an unconverted try and close the gap to 17-8.

Moray replied almost immediately with some hard rucking through the middle by the forwards. Good ball was moved to the backs and centre Struan Henderson dummied and then found the gap to score an unconverted try, the bonus point fourth try, for 22-8.

From the restart, wing forward Neil Wiseman took the ball, drove and set ruck ball. Stand-off Johnny Haslam received the ball and made the break. Ryan Anderson backed up, took the pass and scored under the posts. He converted his own try for 29-8.

Four minutes later, the flyers replied. Scrum-half Irish picked up ball at a ruck on the half way line and his speculative chip kick was chased down by left wing Scott Dow. The ball bounced wickedly backwards away from the home defence and straight into the arms of the wing to score an unconverted try out wide for 29-13.

Moray returned to the offensive and a couple of minutes later stretched the lead. Good driving and popping play through the middle by both forwards and backs was finished off by hooker Dan Thomas. Ryan Anderson converted for 36-13.

The flyers were living off scraps of ball as the home forwards were dominant, however, when they did get ball, their backs looked lively and dangerous.

In the 20th minute they again reduced the lead. A scrum win on their 10 metre line was taken blind and full back Adam Cliff was set free after the defence was drawn in. He made it to the line for an unconverted try to close the gap to 36-18.

Three minutes later, the home side scored their final points of the afternoon. Several driving phases took play into the opposing 22. Struan Henderson received ball from the ruck and sidestepped his way through the defence to score under the posts. Ryan Anderson converted for 43-18.

The Lossiemouth side finished the game the stronger and in the last play of the game gained a bonus point when they scored their fourth try. The move again started in their half and right wing Gus Lambie finished the move off to score the try. Chris Clark converted to leave the final score Moray 43 RAF Lossiemouth 25.

The Moray pack had given their opposite numbers a torrid time all afternoon having won numerous balls against the head in the scrum and having been very competitive at the line-out. Strong running by both forwards and backs had kept the Lossie side on the back foot for most of the afternoon and the home crowd had enjoyed seeing 7 tries run in. The visitors were dangerous behind the scrum and had done well to score 4 tries with the little ball that they did win.

This Saturday, Moray head to Inverness to play Highland Reds in a Caledonia League Division 2 (NW) fixture.
