Moray continued their recent vein of form last Saturday when they defeated Stornoway by 24 points to 12 in a Scottish Hydro Electric Caledonia Division 2 (North West) away league fixture.
The islanders started the brighter of the two teams and deservedly opened their account when they scored an unconverted try for a 5-0 lead.
The Elgin side were looking a bit jaded after a long road and sea trip but the opening try was the spur they needed to get them into the game. Slowly they got into the game and around midway through the half, they reduced the lead to 5-3 when full-back Dale Smith landed a penalty after an infringement in the home 22.
A few minutes later, they took the lead when prop Lewis Higgins pirouetted and scored after some pressure play in the Stornoway half. Dale Smith added the conversion points for a 5-10 advantage.
The lead was further stretched late in the half when captain and centre Marc Higgins took crash ball and broke the home defence to score from 22 metres out. Dale Smith again stepped up to the mark and slotted the conversion for 5-17.
Moray seemed to be in control of the game now but on the stroke of half time, however, the islanders got themselves back into the game when they scored a converted try to reduce the lead to 12-17.
The early part of the second half became very competitive with both sides trying to stamp their authority on the game. The Elgin side had an opportunity to give themselves a little breathing space and take the lead to 8 points but Dale Smith’s long-range penalty attempt narrowly missed.
As the half developed, Moray took more and more control, particularly in the tight, and were rewarded when they scored a third try. A scrum, five metres from the home line, was cleanly won and scrum-half Johnny Haslam picked up and broke blind for the line. No 8 Rob Jolly was on hand to receive the pass and score the try. Dale Smith landed the conversion from wide out to take the score to 12-24, the eventual final score.
After a slow start following a long road and sea trip, the Elgin side had performed really well to win against a Stornoway side who have proved difficult to beat on their home patch. The tight play of the forwards was particularly pleasing as they had been strong in scrum and line-out all afternoon.
This Saturday Moray are at home on league business when they welcome Strathspey to Morriston.
