Moray welcomed Stornoway U16 to Morriston for the 3rd game of the season on Saturday.
This was Stornoway’s first league match and they made the long trek over to Elgin with an early start to catch the ferry.
Moray had a full squad and made a few changes after last week’s game v Highland. The team quickly settled and put Stornoway under pressure from the kick off with some aggressive tackling by the forwards. The Moray scrum was also quick to assert itself and took control winning not only their own ball but also taking scrums against the head.
Moray moved the ball through the backs and after a couple of moves up the pitch they put the ball out to Kieran Young on the wing who ran in from the 22 to open the scoring. Ewan Stuart converted the try.
Moray took the ball from the kick off and continued attacking. After threatening the Stornoway line but failing to score Moray moved the ball to the backs again and Alan Hunte went over to score.
Moray were proving too powerful in the forwards for Stornoway and were also tackling with more commitment to keep the visitors under constant pressure. The scoreboard ticked over regularly with further tries in the first half from Cameron Hughes, Dan Godfrey and Kris Morrison with 2 conversions from Ewan Stuart leaving the score 31- 0 at half time.
The second half saw Moray playing up the slope but the pressure remained on Stornoway and Moray reached 50 points with tries from Ian Simpson, Kieran Cowie and Trevor Jones. Ewan Stuart managed 2 more conversions to take his tally to 10 points.
The final 10 minutes were played out scoreless as a friendly with changes being made to allow every one game time and try out some positional options.
The was an excellent squad performance from Moray with everyone playing their part and the fact that the 8 tries were scored by 8 different players from both the forwards and backs shows how much commitment to the team effort was given by everyone.
Thanks to Stornoway for never buckling in a difficult match for them and playing with great sportsmanship. The friendly banter in the club after will hopefully be repeated when we travel to Stornoway in November.
Next week hopefully sees Orkney visit Elgin for what will be a tough match.
