Mon 20th Sep 2010 |
Moray recorded their first Caledonia League Division 2 (North West) league victory of the season last Saturday, when they resoundingly defeated Lochaber by 53 points to 10 at Morriston Playing Fields.
The Elgin side kicked off and within three minutes had taken the lead. A penalty inside the opposition 22 was kicked to touch 5 metres out. The resultant line out was cleanly won and scrum-half Johnny Haslam broke blind before releasing hooker Dan Thomas to score out wide.
Three minutes later, a second try was added. No. 8 Greg Smith broke the defence on the halfway line before releasing centre Ryan Anderson to outpace the defence and score under the posts. Dale Smith converted for 12-0.
In the 11th minute, the visitors reduced the lead to 12-3 when they landed a penalty after an offside decision in the home 22.
Five minutes later, the lead was reduced further to 12-10. Moray were in possession in midfield but a loose pass was intercepted by the Lochaber stand-off and he made it to the line. He converted his own try.
From the restart, however, the Fort William side were penalised when the ball was picked up from an offside position after a knock on. Dale Smith stepped up and landed the penalty for 15-10.
The home side were intent on keeping he ball alive but unfortunately, on numerous occasions, spilled the ball whilst in threatening positions on the field.
In the 30th minute, they stretched the lead. An attack on the visitor’s line broke down with a knock on but the referee had spotted an earlier offside. Dale Smith calmly slotted the kick for 18-10.
On the stroke of half time, prop Jason Ogg took a short ball on the half way and burst through the defence. As the last line of defence lined him up for the tackle, he offloaded to the supporting Greg Smith who scored under the posts. Dale Smith landed the kick for 25-10, the half time score.
Within 2 minutes of the restart, Ryan Anderson had scored his 2nd and Moray’s 4th and bonus point try. Good handling with numerous offloads took play into the opposition 22 and the centre took a good line to break the defence and score. Dale Smith converted for 32-10.
Moray were in complete control at this stage and were virtually camped in the visitor’s 22 for the next 20 minutes or so. Good defence and some unforced errors meant that no points were added.
In the 62nd minute, however, the lead was stretched. A phase of drives at the Lochaber line was eventually rewarded when prop Stewart Duncan drove over the line and got the ball down. Dale Smith landed the conversion for 39-10.
Four minutes later, it was 46-10. Loose ball was picked up midfield and a couple of short passes later, wing-forward Stuart Harrington had a clear run in to the line for a try which Dale Smith converted.
Moray concluded the scoring in the 78th minute when Ryan Anderson got his 3rd try of the afternoon. He received the ball in an attack down the right side and a pirouette forced a missed tackle and allowed him to sprint for the score. Dale Smith landed the conversion to take his contribution to 18 points for the afternoon.
Final Score : Moray 53 Lochaber 10.
It had been a good all round performance by both forwards and backs and all through the game they showed their intent to play an open and expansive game. There had been instances where they had frustrated themselves with unforced errors in good positions but they stuck at it and in the end were rewarded with a good win.
Lochaber named stand-off Craig Forster as the Moray ‘Man of the Match’ as he had controlled the game well and tackled hard all day.
This Saturday, Moray are again at home when they play Inverness Craig Dunain in a league fixture. Kick off is 3pm.
