KINLOSS 13 - 8 MORAY
Tue 16th Feb 2010
Kinloss v Moray, 13-02-10Moray returned to action last Saturday, for the first time since the 5th December, when they visited RAF Kinloss for a derby Scottish Hydro Electric Caledonia Division 2 (North West) fixture. After a close fought encounter, the flyers won by 13 points to 8 but the Elgin side were left ruing the missed opportunities they had to win the game.

The match kicked off early to allow the Wales v Scotland 6 Nations fixture to be watched on the television. The early part of the game saw Moray full-back Jamie Hickie miss a couple of good penalty chances within the first three minutes. In the 5th minute, however, they took the lead. The home full-back was caught in possession 5 metres from his line and turned over. The ball was quickly moved to the right and scrum-half Johnny Morren threw the dummy and scampered over for the try. Hickie’s attempt at the conversion was from a tight angle and he narrowly missed past the right post leaving the score 0-5.

It was not until the 10th minute that Kinloss ventured into the visitor’s 22 but solid defence repelled the attack.

Kinloss v Moray, 13-02-10Territorial and possession advantage was with the Elgin side at this point but the home defence was not giving anything away.

In the 30th minute, however, Kinloss got themselves back in the game through the boot of their stand-off. The visitors were penalised 30 metres out, for offside at a ruck, and he calmly slotted the kick for 3-5.

This kicked the home side into gear and in the latter part of the half, they were the dominant team. The Moray defence stood strong to leave the half-time score RAF Kinloss 3 Moray 8.

Six minutes into the second half, the flyers took the lead. The Elgin defence were adjudged to have tackled without the ball, in the 22, and the resultant penalty was slotted for 6-5.

A mix up in the visitors defence in the 57th minute allowed Kinloss to stretch the lead. A backs move inside their own half was dropped and the home centre was quickest to react, picked up the ball and raced to the line for a converted try and a 13-5 lead.

Six minutes later, Moray responded. The home side were caught offside at a scrum 25 metres out and HIckie slotted the kick to put them within a converted try of the lead at 13-8.

Kinloss v Moray, 13-02-10This started a period of sustained pressure by the visitors which lasted to the end of the game yielding a couple of good opportunities but no points.

In the 65th minute, No 8 Greg Smith looked to have scored under the posts after he took an inside pass from stand-off Craig Forster but the referee adjudged that the ball had not been properly grounded.

Five minutes later a sweeping back move created an overlap, but unfortunately centre Johnny Haslam, who had a fine game otherwise, dummied rather than release wing Ryan Anderson and the chance was stifled.

The Kinloss defence stoutly held out for the last 10 minutes to record the 13-8 win.

Although not having had a game for a couple of months, Moray played a lot of good rugby and showed a lot of adventure in their efforts. They left the field somewhat disappointed as they knew they had had the chances to win.

After such a long time off due to the weather, it had been good to get a run out. The team are all now looking forward to their next game, at home, a week on Saturday against Stornoway. This will also be an early kick off as Scotland are away to Italy that day.
