RAF KINLOSS 12 - 3 MORAY |
Mon 30th Nov 2009 |
RAF Kinloss edged out Moray by 12 points to 3 in the local derby, 1st round fixture of the Scottish Hydro Regional Bowl at Kinloss last Saturday.
On an afternoon full of heavy showers and on a soft pitch, the RAF side kicked off playing down the slope. The home side showed early intent and took the game to the visitors. In the 10th minute, they took the lead. Untidy ball on the Moray 10 metre line was snapped up by the flyers and the ball moved wide. With the visitors defence in disarray, the ball made it to left wing Carruthers, on the only strip of clean ground, and he outstripped the cover defence to make it to the corner for the try. Gillespie landed a very difficult kick for a 7-0 lead.
The pitch was cutting up badly and most of the play became bogged down in midfield with the conditions contributing to numerous unforced errors from both sides.
Late in the first half, Kinloss made it into the opposition 22 and attacked the line. Defence was sound and good tackling spilled the ball, which allowed the danger to be cleared.
Minutes before half time, the Elgin side forced their way into the home 22. A line, 15 metres out, was taken and driven to 5 metres out where the home side were penalised for taking the maul down. The ball was run and another penalty was given for a similar infringement. This time Moray were in front of the posts and centre Marc Higgins stepped up and slotted the kick to reduce the lead to 7-3, the half time score.
Kinloss started the second half the brighter and for the first 10 to 15 minutes put the visitors under pressure in their 22. Some good defence and some unforced handling errors meant no points were added.
In the 55th minute, the flyers had the chance to extend the lead through the boot when a penalty was awarded for offside, 35 metres out from the Moray goal line. Gillespie pulled the kick wide.
Kinloss did, however, extend their lead in the 61st minute. A speculative kick to the visitor’s goal line was not dealt with by the defence and the home side pounced to score the try. Gillespie missed the kick to leave the score 12-3.
Moray rallied and turned in their best spell of the game in the last 10 minutes or so. Phases of driving play took them deep into the home 22. They attacked the goal line but stout Kinloss defence kept them out. Eventually the home defence turned the ball over and cleared the lines.
The final whistle went with Kinloss progressing to the next round having won by 12 points to 3.
Both teams should be commended for producing an entertaining game of rugby in the foulest of conditions. The virtually consistent rain made handling extremely difficult and the underfoot muddy conditions made open rugby difficult yet the teams served up an exciting and close encounter.
This Saturday, Moray are away on league business to Kingussie to play Strathspey.
