MORAY 48 - 0 INVERNESS CRAIG DUNAIN
Wed 11th Nov 2009
Moray comprehensively won their latest Scottish Hydro Electric Caledonia Division 2 (NW) fixture at home, against Inverness Craig Dunain, by 48 points to nil.

The Inverness side kicked off, playing downhill, and within minutes of the start, the Moray side took a 3-0 lead when full-back Jamie Hickie kicked a penalty after an offside decision.

A few minutes later, with the Elgin side in the opposition 22, they charged down an attempted clearance 10 metres from the line. Scrum-half Johnny Morren moved the ball quickly and Hickie was left with enough room to score an unconverted try in the corner for an 8-0 lead.

In the 18th minute, they increased the lead. With the home side pressing in the 22, the Inverness side knocked on in possession. Clean ball was taken at the resultant scrum and the ball moved wide. This time wing Douglas Ireland outstripped the cover defence to score. Hickie converted for 15-0.

Craig Dunain rallied and came more and more into the game. They pressed in the home half and on a couple of occasions had opportunities but the defence stood strong.

Half time blew with the score Moray 15 Inverness Craig Dunain 0.

The home side kicked off the second half, regained the ball and broke into the 22. A penalty was given for ‘over the top’. The penalty was run; moved and wing-forward Greg Smith came into the line at pace, broke the defence and scored. Hickie landed the conversion attempt for 22-0.

In the 48th minute, Moray scored their fourth and bonus point-winning try. A scrum 10 metres out was picked up by No 8 Dave Porter and he drove and made the line. Hickie slotted the kick for 29-0.

Six minutes later, a hoisted kick by the Inverness full-back was taken by Ireland on the halfway. He pirouetted, broke the first line of defence and sprinted to the line to score. Hickie converted for a 36-0 lead.

Craig Dunain had the opportunity to put points on the board in the 62nd minute but the penalty attempt was pulled.

In the 69th minute, Moray stretched the lead further when youngster Ireland scored his third try of the afternoon. Ball was won in their half and good passing through the backs, released the wing to outpace the defence to score. Hickie landed the conversion for 43-0.

Two minutes from time, the home side rounded off the afternoon with a seventh try. A drive to the line by the forwards was held up over the line. From the resultant scrum, Porter scored an identical try to his first when he picked and drove. Hickie pushed the conversion attempt to leave the final score, Moray 48 Inverness Craig Dunain 0.

Apart from a 15 minute spell in the latter stages of the first half, Moray had controlled the game with forwards providing good ball and the backs looking to spread it wide. ‘Man of the Match’ was Douglas Ireland who scored his first hat-trick for the senior side and had always looked dangerous with ball in hand.

With the Scotland v Fiji Autumn International on this Saturday, there is a break from league duty. There will be, however, a Moray ‘Reds’ v Moray ‘Blues’ game prior to the Scotland game being shown in the clubhouse.
